    Working Apptitude Evaluation

The Doberman Working Aptitude Evaluation (WAE) is a temperament test developed by the Doberman Pinscher Club of America to assess a Doberman’s natural working instincts, stability, and ability to distinguish between normal and threatening situations.

    What is the WAE?

The WAE is designed to measure the traits that define the Doberman as a working breed—including:

    Confidence

    Alertness

    Protectiveness

    Sound judgment

    Recovery after stress

It’s not a protection training test—it evaluates natural temperament, not trained bite work.

    What Happens During the Test?

The evaluation includes a series of controlled scenarios where the dog is exposed to unusual or potentially stressful situations, such as:

    Friendly stranger approach

    Neutral stranger passing by

    Suspicious approach (unusual behavior)

    Threatening approach

Sudden noise (like a dropped object)

Unusual visual stimuli (e.g., odd clothing or movement)

Each situation is designed to see how the dog:

    Reacts initially

    Handles pressure

    Recovers afterward
